How to Evaluate Pest and Wildlife Route Optimization
A field-service route optimization checklist covering appointments, access windows, active work, crews, capacity, and stable route behavior.
Short answer
Route optimization should reduce travel while preserving customer promises and field constraints. Evaluate it with real appointment windows, access hours, active stops, pinned work, crews, technician capacity, service durations, and mid-day changes—not a clean sample map.
A short route can still be a bad route
A mathematically short route fails if it makes a technician late, sends them to a locked property, separates crew work, moves a stop already promised to a customer, or changes repeatedly every time dispatch edits the day.
Use a realistic test set
Ask the vendor to optimize a full operating day.
- A fixed two-hour customer arrival window
- A business with daily gate or access hours
- An in-transit or arrived technician
- Several stops at one property
- Pinned stops that must remain together
- A crew assignment that cannot be moved independently
- A late same-day insertion
- A route with more work than the shift can hold
Check stability and explainability
Running the same route twice should not produce arbitrary reshuffling. Dispatch should be able to see why a task was rejected, held, assigned, or moved. New work should slot into the route when possible instead of triggering a full disruptive re-solve.
Measure the outcome
Compare drive time, on-time arrivals, overtime, unassigned work, stop count, and dispatcher intervention. Route quality is an operational result, not just a lower mileage number.
